This list is replicated in the module handbook, but given that there are hundreds of titles available, I thought I would get a post started that contains only the titles I’ve read and can offer (albeit subjective) pointers on. The list looks big, but this is a body of reading that was started in 1990, so I’ve had plenty of time to get through these titles… You can add to the list either by commenting, or by sending me the details and I’ll edit it into the main body of the post. It doesn’t have to be directly about Hip Hop or even Black music, but anything you feel contributes to the discourse.

Hub 2.0 - Wish List

Submitted by Eli Jenkins on 12 February, 2009 - 14:29.

The hub needs to move, right? But in what direction? In the interests of democracy, fwee speech and general crowdsourcing please go ahead and post your demands here.

Any ideas you've got, from total paradigm shift (the introduction of 'official' moderators, Hub as music label, fine art integration?) to tiny feature tweak (blue link highlights instead of pink?), will be a help in deciding which way the balls need to roll. Now, I'm already a little too jaded to promise that anything (at all) will actually happen, but I damn well want it to, and the more de/constructive ruckus we can make about it the better.

Video

Right y'all. It's a little late for Float's module, but the ICMuS Hub has video(ish). You can now embed your work/relevant video/homemade pr0n into any post. Just copy and paste the embed code from whatever site is hosting your video. For starters, here is the excellent debut of Musical Restaurant supergroup Courtyard...

Hubdate 3000

Submitted by lightbomb on 8 October, 2008 - 08:32.

It's that time of year again, but this time, the search function works. Finally. I brought the Hub's server to its knees last night indexing about 4000 blogposts and comments word by word, so now you can search for terms as small as three letters long (with varying degrees of success).

New music building equipment questions

Submitted by 3wisemonkeys on 7 August, 2008 - 10:40.

Right. I'm just about to get the tender document finalised for the new music building and I need your input. For those of you who havent seen the plans (there is a drawing on the notice board in the common room), there will be 2 studios, a band rehearsal room/small venue, smaller band/group rehearsal rooms, flexible working spaces (basically a room with a mixer and some speakers that you can bring a laptop in to or rehearse in), one to one instrumental teaching rooms, a kitchen/breakout space and a seminar/group work space.

Self-Definition as Critical Practice

Submitted by VirginiaPipe on 6 August, 2008 - 12:03.

I have been tying up loose ends re: Hub affairs. Here is the paper I prepared for Baden Baden. I am not entirely happy with it for two reasons: they insisted on us having it done by end of May - the assessment period was a tough competitor; it had to be kept to an absolute maximum of 2,000 words. Ayway - most of it has been posted before. (Attached is a word file that includes all the footnotes).

Paid work for cubase tutor

Hi All,

Message from Roz Southey:

"I have a friend who would love a personal tutorial in Q base which she has acquired and doesn't know how to use properly. Do you know of anyone who would be glad to oblige? She lives near Durham and is happy to pay for the tutorial."

The Conference – A view from the edge…

I intended from the outset to post a blog review on the Hub to supplement Musicfilmbroth’s tireless coverage of this event (everything discussed here is viewable in its entirety on www.musicfilmbroth.com, for which extended plaudits to Dr. Float), but the experience became unexpectedly difficult for me, and ended up yielding a staggering realisation about myself. I should point out, also, that this isn’t meant to be a report. Rather it articulates and elaborates my own take on things as they unfolded. It’s about my view, from my position(s). I will summarise most presentations with the proviso that anyone reading this can then go to MFB to hear/see the presentation in question. While Xmas, then marking, scuppered my progress with this endeavour, I’m hoping that the onset of the Improv Theory module might lend it fresh relevance, although, aside from all that, it’s a useful exercise for me to try and publicly articulate some of the surprising conclusions I drew (for those taking that module, read this, then watch the WHOLE conference on MFB – really: it’ll get you started on the pursuit of articulated formulations on the subject).
